… project for my school, Columbia River High School, I chose to do an experiment that focused on windmills and their efficiencies. I tested the effect of blade pitch on the length of time required to raise a 100 gram weight 300 mm, and on the tip speed (TS) of the windmill. Using experimental data, the optimum tip speed ratio (TSR), or the ratio between the optimum tip speed and the air speed, was calculated. The investigation provides insight into how the angle of the blades, TS, and TSR are related, and are all important factors in the success of a windmill.
