Energy Savers: Sizing Small Wind Turbines

Sizing Small Wind Turbines

Small wind turbines used in residential applications typically range in size from 400 watts to 20 kilowatts, depending on the amount of electricity you want to generate.

A typical home uses approximately 9400 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year (about 780 kWh per month). Depending on the average wind speed in the area, a wind turbine rated in the range of 5–15 kilowatts would be required to make a significant contribution to this demand. A 1.5-kilowatt wind turbine will meet the needs of a home requiring 300 kilowatt-hours per month in …

Small could be beautiful in UK wind energy

Magazine Article, Source : The Manufacturer Zone : Sustainable manufacturing Published : July 2009

The UK small wind system manufacturing industry is robust but at risk. As other countries governments wake up to the potential benefits of a domestic small wind industry, the UK industry cannot afford to be complacent and government must engage with it to capitalise on a sound base as the global market expands. …

What’s So Great About Small Turbine Wind Energy?

Small turbine wind energy is the fastest growing of any renewable energy technology. It is produced in a similar way to how an alternator produces electricity as your car moves. The only difference is the air spins the turbine to produce the power. And as the wind speed increases the turbine produces more electricity. In windy regions, such as near coastlines, small turbine wind energy is an ideal way of producing power for households and businesses.

Even if you do not live in a windy area, small turbine wind energy can still be used to supplement the electricity supply. What’s more …

Residential Solar Power vs. Small Wind Systems

Solar collector collection

Residential solar panels

Thinking about reducing your energy costs in the New Year with a renewable energy system? Comparing solar power to wind largely depends on the size of the system. When we’re talking utility scale renewable energy, wind is probably less expensive than solar. However, when we take it down to an individual, residential level,

Small Wind Turbines Complement Architecture

Vertical Axis Wind Turbines vs. Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines

Wind turbines can be positioned various ways to operate. Generally, The two major ways energy is harvested in wind is either vertically or horizontally. The terms refer to which way the turbine “blades” run in relation to wind direction and the ground surface.

Vertical axis turbine blades are situated vertically to cross wind, at an angle perpendicular to the ground. Horizontal wind turbines face the wind horizontally, parallel to the ground.

Vertical axis wind turbines are often referred to by …

Energy Savers: Installing and Maintaining a Small Electric Wind System

Installing and Maintaining a Small Electric Wind System

With proper installation and maintenance, a small wind electric system should last up to 20 years or longer.

Installation

Before installing your system, you first need to do the following:

  • Find the best site
  • Size your wind turbine
  • Decide whether you’ll have a grid-connected or stand-alone system
  • Understand your local zoning, permitting, and neighborhood covenant requirements.

The manufacturer/dealer should be able to help you install your small wind electric system. Many people …

The Indic View: Small Wave Power Plant in Maharashtra

… is setting up a small tidal power plant in 2 coastal villages in Ratnagiri district. A pilot of sorts it will produce between 15 to 20 kW of power when it goes operational this May. The project costs about Rs 4.5 million ($100,000), and similar projects are underway in 15 other villages. The hope is that the success of this project could lead to a similar project with a capacity of 250 kW.

Of course this project is not going to help Maharashtra or India tide over any power crises soon, but it is a good attempt to move forward on a technology that is at least as promising as wind power is.
